Unfortunately I don't really feel like I have read many books with great relationships between mother and daughter. This is probably in part because I read a lot of YA, and typically the parents play a small role or are missing all together.

This book is insanely beautiful!

I just finished Me Before You by Jojo Moyes, which I will post a review on soon as soon as I stop crying and pull together my feelings. I knew that book would leave me with a bit of a book hangover so I decided Illuminae would help me power through and stop me going into a slump.

Illuminae by Amier Kaufman and Jay Kristoff is a book that has been getting a lot of hype recently. It interested me because I have never read anything like it before.

What made me want to pick it up is the format of the book: it is told through a collection of documents such as interviews, hacked emails, medical records, military files and more. Flipping though the pages makes it seem like a fascinating read. The relatively daunting size seems more manageable because of it's unique form of story telling.

I will let you all know what I thought once I finished it.  

My bookshelves are a hot mess. There is no sense of order to my books, I was just shoving any book anywhere that it fit. I had some spare time the other day so I decided to colour code some of my books, to make a rainbow. I know there are some people that are completely against this, and I have read many blog posts outlining why it isn't a good idea, because it's hard to find the books you want. But I like it looks really beautiful, plus I wasn't able to find the books I was after anyway, because I had no organisation system. Now at least, if I know the colour of the spine, I will hopefully be able to find the book I'm after.

I'm a true believer that the reading experience contributes massively to how much you enjoy a book, and I tend to enjoy a book much more if I read it in a good environment where I can relax rather than on a crowded bus or an uncomfortable table.

My bed in my sanctuary, it is the most comfortable place on earth thanks to all the pillows I pile on there (it may not look like it but there are 11 pillows on that bad boy - which my boyfriend complains about half the time). I also appreciate the proximity to all my books I have 2 night stands that hold some books and the big white thing on the far left of the photo is my main bookcase

I really enjoyed this 'apocalypse adjacent' story. This book is told from the perspective of Mikey. Him and his friends are never involved in the crazy stuff that happens but at the beginning of each chapter there is a summary of what is happening in the indie kids' lives:

'Chapter the First, in which the Messenger of the Immortals arrives in surprising shape, looking for a permanent Vessel; and after being chased by her through the woods, indie kid Finn meets his final fate'

In the story all we see of this is Finn running past our gang as they hang out.

This book cleverly poked fun at many YA troupes. One line that had me laughing was when Henna said 'this is worse than when they were all dying beautifully of cancer'. It was hilarious how Patrick Ness teased the names of characters books 'with fellow indie kids Finn, Dylan, Finn, Finn, Lincoln, Archie, Wisconsin, Finn, Aquamarine, and Finn' and if you think non- indie kid Henna has an indie kid name - in the back of the book Ness tells us real life human Henna won an auction for her name to be in his newest book 

Overall I really enjoyed this - it was refreshing take on literature. This book tells us that even if you don't fall on crazy, passionate love at 17, or you're not dying beautifully of cancer, if you're not the chosen one and you don't save the world; your story still deserves to be told.
